Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf)

Ubuntu 15.10 Code Named "Wily Werewolf" is the latest release of Ubuntu Linux (Released October 22nd 2015). Ubuntu Linux is one of the most popular desktop distributions suited to both new and experienced users of the Linux operating system. Included within this release of Ubuntu you will get as standard the Firefox Web Browser, RhythmBox Music Player/Manager, a Full Office Suite (Libre Office Version 5). ThunderBird is the default email client provided. CD/DVD burning is provided by "Brasero", a popular media tool. Ubuntu 15.10 is now shipping with kernel version 4.2.0-16.

Installing Ubuntu Linux (Ubuntu 15.10 - Wily Werewolf)

To try Ubuntu 15.10, simply download the image that matches your processor type (32bit or 64bit) from the link below:

Download Ubuntu 15.10

Once you have downloaded your iso image of Ubuntu that matches your system architecture (32 bit or 64 bit), you will need to burn this iso image to a DVD. For software that can do this, you can search for "dvd iso burning software" in the search box provided above. Your computer may already have CD/DVD burning software already installed such as "Brasero, K3B, Nero, CDBurnerXP or Roxio". Once you have burned your chosen "iso" image of Ubuntu to your Media, you will need to place your DVD disc into the DVD drive of the target system and reboot your system. As your computer system reboots, you will need to press the appropriate key to access your system's BIOS settings. On many systems this key will be "F8", "F11" or "F12". Most systems will display a message indicating which key needs to be pressed. Once you have access to your system's BIOS settings, you will need to modify the boot order of your system to boot from CD/DVD first. Once this change has been made, you can now reboot your system and follow the installation Instructions below. If you are installing into a Virtual Environment, simply copy the "iso" image to the relevant location provided by your software.

Welcome Screen

Once your system has booted, you will be greeted with a welcome screen similar to the one below. At this screen you have the option of trying out Ubuntu first before installing. If you choose the "Try Ubuntu" option, you can try Ubuntu 15.10 without installing anything to your systems hard drive. This option is useful as it allows you to test your wifi settings and the operating system before committing to an installation. To install Ubuntu Linux on to your hard drive, choose the option "Install Ubuntu". Also from the "Welcome Screen", you can specify the language to be used throughout your installation. In the example below "English" has been chosen. A link is also provided below to allow you to read the official release notes for this version of Ubuntu.

Preparing to Install Ubuntu 15.10

At this screen, you are reminded of the minimum space requirements that are needed for this installation. You should have at least 6.9 GB of available drive space and an active internet connection. You also have the option of installing "third party software". This latter option is recommended as this will provide the necessary plugins/codecs for the playback of audio and video files. To select this option, simply place a tick in the selection box. To continue with your installation, click on the "Continue" button in the lower right hand corner.

Installation Type

At this screen several installation options are available to choose from. In this example, I am installing to an empty disk with no other operating systems or data present. If you have another operating system present, Ubuntu should find this and give you additional options regarding installing this new system along side the existing system. In this particular example I have chosen the option of "Erase disk and install Ubuntu". You may also choose the LVM (Logical Volume Manager) Option as this makes for the adding of additional disks at a later date easier to manage. However, it is not necessary to choose the "LVM" option.
(For more information regarding the use of "LVM" see the LVM Guide) An option for the encrypting of your installation is available. You may wish to consider this option if your system is a portable device such as a Laptop. If you would like to create your own partitions manually, then an option of "Something else" can be selected. Once you have made your choices, click on the "Install Now" option to continue with the installation.
