Unity Makeover

Unity Desktop Makeover

Installing Themes on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

If you fancy a change from the standard themes and icon sets that come with Ubuntu, then now is the time to give your desktop a makeover. Below we will show you how to change your menu colours, icons and desktop background to give your desktop a new look.

First we are going to install "Ambiance & Radiance Colour Suite" by "Ravefinity". Then we will install the "numix" icon circle theme. Simply follow the instructions below:

Installing Ambiance & Radiance Colour themes

First we will need to add what is known as a "ppa" (custom repository) with the "sudo apt-add-repository" command:

john@ubuntu1404:~$ sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ravefinity-project/ppa

Next you will need to update your repositories to pick up the new "ppa". To do this we simply issue the command "sudo apt-get update":

john@ubuntu1404:~$ sudo apt-get update

Now we can issue the install command "sudo apt-get install ambiance-colors radiance-colors":

john@ubuntu1404:~$ sudo apt-get install ambiance-colors radiance-colors

Install Numix Circle icon theme

To install the "numix" circle icon theme we follow a similar process to the one we carried out earlier.

First we need to add the numix ppa. To do this we use the "sudo apt-add-repository" command:

john@ubuntu1404:~$ sudo apt-add-repository ppa:numix/ppa

Now we need to update our repositories to pick up the new "ppa". To do this we issue the "sudo apt-get update" command:

john@ubuntu1404:~$ sudo apt-get update

Now we can install the new numix themes:

john@ubuntu1404:~$ sudo apt-get install numix-gtk-theme numix-icon-theme-circle

Unity Tweak Tool

Before we can start making any changes to our systems colours settings and icons we need to install a tool called the "Unity Tweak Tool". It is this tool that allows us to choose our colours and themes. To install the "Unity Tweak Tool" we only need to issue one command:

john@ubuntu1404:~$ sudo apt-get install unity-tweak-tool

To access the Unity Tweak Tool, we can locate this from the dashboard. Simply click on the "Ubuntu" icon in the upper left hand corner and type "unity tweak" into the search box. You should now see an icon similar to the one in the screen shot below:

Accessing Unity Tweak Tool - Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

Now click on the icon to launch the application. You should now see a menu similar to the one below:

Now from within the application click on the "Theme" icon. You should now see a list of available themes with different associated colours. In this example I have chosen the theme "Ambiance-blue".

Unity Tweak Tool - Select Theme

This selection will change our system menus to the colour blue.

Next we need to change our icon themes. From the Unity tweak tool, select the icon option towards the top.

We are going to choose the "numix" circle option:

Now all we need to do is change our desktop wallpaper to match our colour schemes. In the following example I have chosen one of the standard wallpapers. To change your desktop background simply "right click" on your desktop and select "Change Desktop Background".

Now select the "Water Web" design:
