Ubuntu 16.04 LTS

Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Code Named "Xenial Xerus" is the latest "Long Term Support" release of Ubuntu Linux (Official Release Date April 21st 2016). Ubuntu Linux is one of the most popular desktop distributions suited to both new and experienced users of the Linux Operating System. Included within this release of Ubuntu you will get as standard the Firefox Web Browser, RhythmBox Music Player and Manager, a Full Office Suite (Libre Office Version 5). The popular email client ThunderBird is also included as default. To download and install the Ubuntu 16.04 Linux Operating system, simply follow the instructional guide below. There are significant improvements within this latest release including a replacement for the "Ubuntu Software Centre" known now as "Software". Online search is now disabled by default. The "Unity" Launcher can now also be moved to the bottom of the screen.

Installing Ubuntu Linux (Ubuntu 16.04 LTS)

To try Ubuntu 16.04, simply download the "Desktop" image that matches your systems processor type (32bit or 64bit) from the link below:

Download Ubuntu 16.04

Once you have downloaded your chosen iso image of Ubuntu 16.04, you will need to burn this iso image to a DVD. For software that can do this, you can search for "dvd iso burning software" in the search box provided above. Your computer may already have CD/DVD burning software already installed such as "Brasero, K3B, Nero, CDBurnerXP or Roxio". Once you have burned your chosen "iso" image of Ubuntu to your Media, you will need to place your DVD disc into the DVD drive of the target system and reboot your system. As your computer system reboots, you will need to press the appropriate key to access your system's BIOS settings. On many systems this key will be "F8", "F11" or "F12". Most systems will display a message indicating which key needs to be pressed. Once you have access to your system's BIOS settings, you will need to modify the boot order of your system to boot from CD/DVD first. Once this change has been made, you can now reboot your system and follow the installation guide below. If you are installing into a Virtual Environment, simply copy the "iso" image to the relevant location provided by your software.

Welcome Screen

Once your system has booted, you will be greeted with a welcome screen similar to the one below. At this screen you have the option of "Try Ubuntu" or "Install Ubuntu". If you choose the option of "Try Ubuntu", you can try Ubuntu 16.04 LTS without installing anything to your systems hard drive. This option is very useful as it allows you to test your wifi settings and try out the operating system before committing to an installation. To "Install Ubuntu" Linux on to your hard drive, choose the option "Install Ubuntu". On the left of the screen you are given an option of selecting the Language that is to be used throughout. In the example below "English" has been chosen. A link is also provided that allows you to read the official release notes for this version of Ubuntu Linux.

Installation Type

At this screen several installation options are available to choose from. In the example below, I am installing to an empty disk with no other operating systems or data present. If you have another operating system present, Ubuntu should find this and give you additional options regarding installing this new system along side the existing system. In this particular example I have chosen the option of "Erase disk and install Ubuntu". You may also choose the LVM (Logical Volume Manager) Option as this makes for the adding of additional disks at a later date easier to manage. However, it is not necessary to choose the "LVM" option.
(For more information regarding "LVM" see the LVM Guide) An option for the encrypting of your installation is available. You may wish to consider this option if your system is a portable device such as a Laptop or Netbook. If you would like to create your own partitions manually, then an option of "Something else" can be selected. Once you have made your selections, click on the "Install Now" option to continue with your installation.
